Brothers of St Gabriel to manage St Mary’s Youth Centre Sandakan

SANDAKAN – The agreement for the management of St Mary’s Youth Centre, Sandakan between the Titular Superior of the Brothers of St Gabriel, Malaya and the Registered Trustee of the Diocese of Sandakan was officially sealed on 18th February 2014, by Bro Stephen Tee SG, representing the Brothers of St Gabriel, and Bishop Julius Gitom representing the Diocese of Sandakan.

Edward Yahan: I come from a Catholic family of St Martin’s parish, Telupid. I am the oldest of 6 siblings.

My parents and other family members have always encouraged me to join vocation seminars, which I have from time to time.

KOTA KINABALU – “Be the light and salt to the world…” This is the crux of His Grace Archbishop John Wong’s message to the Assembly of Catholic Lawyers, comprising of members of the Bench and the Bar, at the 3rd Annual Celebration of the “Red Mass” which took place Feb 15, 2014 at St Simon Church Likas.

While urging the lawyers to continue discovering their own Faith, His grace also reminded them of the Church social teaching concerning justice and fundamental liberties. He challenged the lawyers to be ready to stand in line, when responding to God’s call in defending the Truth and dare them

EYC 2014 has opened my eyes

Evans Rizal – It’s been a month since Emmaus Youth Camp 2014 and there’s much that I would like to share.

I came to know about the EYC three years ago when I attended the Emmaus Teens Camp in 2011. I know it’s not by chance that I participated in EYC 2014. Somehow I believed that I was led to it.

Among the many things that happened at EYC, one that comes vividly to mind was the “exposure” visit to the Kayumadang dumpsite at Telipok. I saw heaps of stinky rubbish that we threw away and lots of them were plastic bags.

1st Vocation Awareness Seminar

TANJUNG ARU – The inaugural Vocation Awareness Seminar to Consecrated Life was held at Stella Maris Church Catechetical Centre, Tanjung Aru Jan 17-19. It was jointly organized by the various Religious Congregations, namely the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (FSIC), Brothers of St Gabriel (Monfort), Daughters of St Paul (DSP), Brothers of de La Salle (FSP) and Order of Franciscan Minor Capuchin (OFM Cap).

The Myths of Vaccination Exposed by Dr Jeffrey Soon

Author: Dr Jeffrey Soon was the Paediatrician and Head of Paediatric Department, Queen Elizabeth Hospital from 1987-1990. He was Resident Consultant Paediatrician to Damai Specialist Hospital from 1990-2010. Currently he treats from Klinik Pakar Kanak Kanak Dr Soon and at the same time a visiting paediatrician to Damai Specialist Hospital.

Every year millions of children die because they did not receive vaccinations against easily preventable diseases. While much progress has been made to stop this, these efforts have been compromised increasingly by a slew of myths about vaccination that have arisen and now spread easily because of the internet. I therefore feel compelled by my civic and moral duty as a doctor to provide the facts about vaccination, particularly in Malaysia and address the various myths on this subject

Vaccination is also known as immunisation. The human body is given an artificially weakened part of a germ (virus or bacteria) so that the body becomes ready to fight the actual germ if it attacks the body. Apart from clean water, vaccination programs have probably been the most significant factor in reducing sickness and death from infectious diseases in the world.

It is estimated that about 11 million children under 5 years die each year because they did not receive the recommended childhood immunisations.

The vaccination program started with DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) followed by BCG in 1961, oral Polio vaccine in 1972, Measles vaccine 1984, Rubella vaccine 1988 and Hepatitis B vaccine in 1990.

KOTA KINABALU – This year, the Vocation Seminar for the Diocesan Priesthood drew over more than 140 young men from the three dioceses in Sabah.

The seminar was held from Jan 17-19, 2014 at Bundu Tuhan Retreat Centre, themed ‘The chosen one of God’. In his homily during the Opening Mass, Archbishop John Wong reminisced about his younger days

CMI Children Celebrate Christmas

KOTA KINABALU(CS).- Christmas is a time for joy and as children, what nicer way to make joyful noises than at a party!

The children of Church of Mary Immaculate (CMI) celebrated the birthday of our Lord Jesus Christ. with a Children Christmas Party on Sunday, Dec 22 at the CMI canteen. The occasion was well attended by over 100 parishioners, comprising of parents and 92 children who have registered earlier for the party.
