SSEC witnesses groundbreaking ceremony for school field
LIKAS – As the St Simon Educational Complex witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction works on a 4-acre field located within the complex grounds on 15 Mar 2017, another milestone was being marked in the history of the school.
The ceremony was officiated by Archbishop John Wong, in the presence of members of the Board of Trustees, Board of Governors, Project Committee, students and teachers of SRS Datuk Simon Fung.
The construction of SSEC, which consists of Maktab Nasional, SRS Datuk Simon Fung, Taska and Tadika Datuk Simon Fung, began in February 1994 and was completed in November 1994. In 1995 the three schools decided to adopt the overall name for the educational hub as St Simon Educational Complex. The complex was the only building in the Kingfisher Park area at that time. The complex is fully owned by the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu and registered under the Malaysian Education Ministry with English as the main medium of teaching.
Maktab Nasional offers International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) as an enrichment programme besides the Malaysian syllabus, while SRS Datuk Simon Fung offers Cambridge English for Life (CEFL). Taska and Tadika Datuk Simon Fung create a stimulating and creative learning environment for their students with emphasis on interactive activities and discovery through play.
To have a school field to play is a dream of every student and staff in the complex. With an area the size of an international football field, it is unfortunate that the field has been left idle since it was built in 1995 due to the poor condition of the grounds.
With the initiative of some concerned parents, and headed by the Headmistress of SRS Datuk Simon Fung, Winnie Voo, the committee proposed to upgrade half of the field with an estimated cost of RM220,000.
Donations towards the completion of the field are welcome and generous contributors can contact Winnie Voo @ 088-431680, Maktab Nasional Principal, Alexander Funk @ 088-431687/088-435686, or Taska & Tadika Supervisor, Caroline Stephens @ 088-431681 for further details. – Lord Kenny
