SHCP celebrates Women’s Day with small dinner gathering

KOTA KINABALU – Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish here celebrated International Women’s Day with a small dinner gathering on 4 Mar 2017 at a local restaurant.

The attendees were women representing various women groups in the parish.  Among the invited guests were Archbishop John Wong, Archbishop Emeritus John Lee, and some of the assistant pastors.

International Women’s Day is celebrated universally on Mar 8, with a different theme each year, and this year’s theme was “Be bold for change.

Anita Tunggolou, Archdiocesan Women Commission chairperson,  revealed that the decision for the IWD to be celebrated at parish level was in consideration of the preparation of the upcoming 9th Conference of Catholic Women of East Malaysia, which will be hosted by the archdiocese in August.

In conjunction with the theme, Tunggolou invited Abp Wong to address the women on the kind of changes they should prepare for.

In his speech, the prelate urged those present to do something for their less fortunate sisters such the victims of domestic violence, of unjust treatment by employers, of human trafficking, the marginalised due to poverty and illiteracy, those abandoned by their spouses, and others.

In his closing remarks, Abp Wong said it is his prayer that the commission would go beyond the dinner and be prepared to be “a voice for the voiceless,” and with the help of the Holy Spirit “be bold for change.”
