Over a thousand turn up for inaugural Christmas run
KOTA KINABALU – Over a thousand people turned up for the inaugural Gaya Christmas run on 10 Dec 2016 here.
One thousand, three hundred runners registered with 80 percent being new runners took part in the 10 KM route, starting from Padang Merdeka, along Tg Lipat Highway, till round about Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, back along Tg Lipat Highway, and ending back at Padang Merdeka.
Among the runners were Archbishop John Wong of Kota Kinabalu, some priests and religious sisters.
The run was part of the 12th Kota Kinabalu (Gaya) Christmas Celebration, to be held nightly Dec 13-16 at Padang Merdeka.
There will be a variety of stage performances, 200 hawker stalls, carols singing by church groups along the Padang Merdeka, two huge Christmas trees 50 feet and 20 feet tall, Nativity Hut depicting the birth of Christ with snow machine, presentation of goodie bags to children below 12 years old, donations for 10 selected charity and welfare organisations.
The annual event is organised by the Sabah Council of Churches in collaboration with the KK City Hall with the Catholic Church taking charge of this year’s organisation, assisted by the Protestant Church of Sabah.
