The earthquake that shook Sabah on June 5 has taken 18 lives, among whom were heroic mountain guides and innocent school children and their teachers. Many buildings fell apart. Landslides, mudslides, fallen trees, broken bridges, dried pipes and so forth have created havoc especially to the people in Ranau and Kota Belud districts. But it is the emotional trauma of the people living at the foothills of Mt Kinabalu that continues to cause nightmares as subsequent aftershocks are still being experienced.

KK Archbishop’s presence consoles affected villagers

Abp meeting the peopleKIAU NULUH – The presence of the CAC (Catholic Archdiocesan Centre) staff together with Archbishop John Wong in Kg Kiau Nuluh Jun 26 has boosted the villagers’ faith in God in the aftermath of the recent Ranau earthquake. Some 100 villagers gathered at the chapel as early as 9.00 am although they were told that the CAC team would only arrive at 11.30 am. Fr Michael Modoit, parish priest of St Pius X Bundu Tuhan was with them.

Ranau parish distributes bottled water donations to all without exception

ops-water2KOTA KINABALU – Ranau parish distributed bottled water donations to all without exception in the aftermath of the 5 June 2015 earthquake.

That the bottled water donations would be forthcoming was a foregone conclusion. After all, Sabahans of all faiths are known to come together to help their fellow brethren in times of need.

But how the people at St Peter Claver Church would distribute the water in Ranau – having experienced dry taps for almost five days due to the water treatment plants being closed down – was another. But Fr Nicholas and team performed wonderfully.

Special Mass celebrated for quake victims at Kinabalu Park

Mass at Kinabalu hallRanau (CS) –  It is good if we can participate the solemn celebration for the blessing and protection of all climbers and workers and for the departed souls (according to RC rite and faith).

So reads the backdrop banner, which was pinned on the stage wall at Dewan Kinabalu, Kinabalu National Park, Ranau.  It was positioned there for the Special Mass that was celebrated on Saturday afternoon Jun 13 to pray for the departed souls of Joseph Solugin, Valerian Joannes, Ricky Masirin and Robbi Sappinggi, as well as for others who perished in the wake of the earthquake that struck Ranau Jun 5.

Rukom Ulu Pitas community turns out in full force for chapel blessing

page 30 RukomPITAS – It was a day of great rejoicing for the Catholic community of Rukom Ulu Pitas as they came out in full force May 19 to witness the blessing of their new chapel. The blessing of St Pio’s Chapel was solemnized by Archbishop John Wong together with the parish priest of St Theresa Kota Marudu, Fr Frederick Raymond and his assistant Fr Jack Johimi. Also present was former parish priest Fr Edward Raymond.

It is also called the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ which saw two significant occasion; the commission of the Extraordinary Communion Minister and first-time procession of Corpus Christi around the Cathedral’s compound.
