Former apostolic delegate in Malaysia appointed nuncio to Israel

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, titular archbishop of Capri, as apostolic nuncio to Israel and apostolic delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine on 13 Sept 2017.  Born on 13 March 1953 at Predore, Italy,  Girelli was ordained as priest on 17 June 1978, and as bishop on 17 June 2006.  He served as apostolic nuncio to Singapore since 2011 and as apostolic delegate in Malaysia and Brunei from 2011 to 2013.  In his new appointment, the 64-year-old diplomat succeeds Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, 75.
