SANDAKAN – Fr Sunny Chung, assistant parish priest of the Cathedral Parish, celebrated his 4th sacerdotal anniversary at St Mary’s Cathedral Aug 10. This special day was marked with him accompanying the parish priest in blessing and officiating the opening of the Marian Bookshop which was located at the ground floor of the parish building before proceeding to the Cathedral for his Thanksgiving Mass. Fr Sunny presided over the mass, assisted by Fr Thomas Makajil and Fr Phillip Muji.
During his homily, Fr Sunny recalled how, at the tender age of 8, his pious grandaunt had foreseen him to be a priest during a Mass. Secondly, during his youth ministry days in St Joseph’s Church Papar, he recalled how he was inspired by the late Fr Amandus who, though advanced in age, kept serving the church diligently. It was then that he came to realize that the Church was in dire need of younger priests.
At that time, he prayed that God would call his friends from the youth ministry to the priesthood. However, God has other plans! Instead, he was the one to whom God revealed of his choice, and he fell in love with this sacred vocation.
Fr Thomas thanked all who came in support of Fr Sunny, and in particular Fr Sunny’s family members who came all the way from Papar.
In honour of Fr Sunny, St Mary’s Cathedral parish organized a pot luck dinner after Mass, with Bishop Julius Gitom in attendance. Also present to bless Fr Sunny on this joyous occasion were the Brothers of St Gabriel, the Franciscan Sisters, the Good Shepherd Sisters and parishioners. – DOSPO, DS
