5 Local Churches designated as pilgrimage sites during the Jubilee year of Hope

SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL, KOTA KINABALU – The first Sacred Heart Church was built in 1938 but was destroyed during WWII. It was rebuilt in 1949 and recognized as a Cathedral in 1976, dedicated in 1981 by Bishop Simon Fung with Cardinal Jaime Sin present from Manila. Today, it serves as the seat of Archbishop John Wong. ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH, PENAMPANG – The Stone Church in Sabah, was completed a few years after WWII, in 1947. Now it is a parish for more than 10,000 baptized Catholics.
