Timothy and Titus were disciples and assistants of St Paul, who addressed to them three of his Epistles. Timothy accompanied the Apostle on many of his journeys and eventually became bishop of Ephesus. According to tradition, he was beaten to death by a mob when he opposed the worship of Dionysus around 97. Titus seems to have served as the first bishop of Crete. He died around 96. The letters written to them are called the pastoral epistles, for they contain excellent admonitions for the instruction of both pastors and laity. – CTS New Daily Missal 2012, p 2523; Christian Prayer: Liturgy of the Hours, Saint Paul Publications Pasay 1990, p 1068)
