‘Flowers With Purpose’ bring hope to those in the peripheries
SANDAKAN – In response to the Year of Mercy, St Mary’s Cathedral Parish Human Development Ministry has embarked on a fundraising project, ‘Flowers With Purpose’ beginning with Advent 2015. The proceeds from the sale were used solely to carry out corporal works of mercy to bring Christmas joy to families living in the peripheries.
The team set up stores in front of St Mary’s Cathedral, St Joseph’s Church and St Mark’s Church to sell the potted plants, which were sold at RM25 each. Parishioners responded positively in making the project meaningful. By taking a pot home, they had indeed contributed to the needy.
Many had contributed to the fruitfulness of the project: the suppliers, the promotion and marketing team and above all, the caring parishioners who purchased the flowers. A total of RM4,974.00 was raised from the sale of flowers, contributions from parishioners, a-Ringgit-a-day Diocesan staff initiative for Advent, as well as contributions from the catechumens.
The proceeds had been distributed to 27 needy families in the form of sundry goods, to the Community Learning Centre (CLC) for children of migrant workers and to the family of Fr Jasery Gabuk of St Martin Telupid, whose family house in Kiulu was completely burnt down. – DS
