turibiusTuribius was born at Mayorga Spain in 1538.  He taught law at the University of Salamanca for many years.  In 1580, even though he was a layman, he was appointed archbishop of Lima Peru and journeyed to America.  Burning with apostolic zeal, he called together many councils and synods which promoted the reform of religion throughout the whole region.  He vigorously defended the laws of the Church and earnestly looked after the people committed to his care by visiting them frequently.  He devoted much of his time and attention to the care of the native Indian population.  He died in 1606. – CTS New Roman Missal 2012, p 2615; Christian Prayer 1990, p 1101.
