ignatiusIgnatius was born in 1491 into a noble family at Loyola Spain.  He spent his early years at court and as a soldier.  He was injured at the battle of Pamplona in 1521 and experienced a conversion during his convalescence.  He went to write the Spiritual Exercises, study theology in Paris where he attracted his first followers, and afterward in Rome joined them together as the first members of the Society of Jesus.  He exercised a fruitful apostolate both by his written works and in the training of his disciples who won great praise for their renewal of the Church, the education of the young and the preaching of the Gospel to every corner of the world.  He died in Rome in 1556. – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 2864; Christian Prayer 1990, p 1180-81
