Sharbel or Charbel was born in 1828 in Bekaa-Kafra Lebanon. He became a Catholic Maronite monk, taking his vows at the monastery of St Maron Annaya. From 1875 he lived as a hermit, with the Holy Eucharist as the source and summit of his life, and his reputation for holiness spread far and wide.
