Angela Merici was born in 1474 in Desenzano in the territory of Lombardy. She took the habit of the Third Order of St Francis and called together girls whom she instructed in charitable works and care of the sick. In 1516 she founded at Brescia the Institute of St Ursula (Ursulines), the first teaching order for women approved by the Church. She died in 1540. – CTS New Daily Missal 2012, p 2526.
