vincent de paulVincent de Paul was born in Gascony France in 1581.  After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest at twenty.  Legend says he endured a period of captivity in Tunis.  At any rate, after being falsely accused of theft, he dedicated himself to evangelising the poor, the unfortunate and the suffering.  He founded the Congregation of Priests of the Mission (Lazarists) to supervise the formation of priests and to give support to the poor.  With the help of St Louise de Marillac, he also founded the Daughters of Charity.  These congregations, together with the well-known Society of St Vincent de Paul, continue his charitable work today.  He died in Paris in 1660. – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 3021; Christian Prayer 1990, p 1234
