JohnDunsScotus_-_fullJohn Duns Scotus was probably born at Duns in the Borders Scotland in 1265.  He joined the Franciscans and studied at Cambridge, Oxford and Paris.  “Scotist” thought had a great influence on medieval philosophy and theology.  Among other achievements, the “Subtle Doctor” is remembered for his strong defense of Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception at a time when many doubted the dogma.  He died in Cologne in 1308 and was beatified by John Paul II in 1992. – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 3128
