albanAlban was a citizen of Verulamium (now St Albans Hertfordshire) who converted to Christianity, it is said, after sheltering a fugitive priest.  He was beheaded on Holmhurst Hill in 209 or 254, where an abbey was later built.  He is the protomartyr of England. – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 2760
