Romuald was born in Ravenna Italy in 950 to a noble family. He joined the Cluniac monastery of San Miniato. He travelled through various lands seeking solitude ad establishing houses at Fonte Avellana and Camaldoli, which became the mother house of an Order of hermit monks following the Rule of St Benedict.
